solar decathlon

What is it ?

The Solar Decathlon is an international competition, organised since 2002 by the US Department of Energy. This is a key meeting with major media coverage, hosting more than 300.000 visitors, and became the international touchstone competition in the field of sustainable housing.

The Concept

This contest challenges multidisciplinary university teams all over the globe.

 

Those teams will compete in the design and construction of an innovative & eco-responsible house, fully self-sufficient and powered by solar energy.

 

But not only...

The Solar Decathlon competition enhance :

 

the renewable energy integration, intelligent energy management and generation of knowledge on sustainable constructions.

 

The students from universities throughout Africa and around the globe have to design highly energy-efficient, solar-powered and affordable homes adapted to the african climate and location.

Objectives of the Solar Decathlon contest

creativity

Raise awareness of participating students on the benefits and opportunities of renewable
energies and sustainable construction and challenging them to think creatively to develop
innovative solutions that contribute to energy savings.

social awareness

Facilitate the understanding & raise the public awareness to responsible energy use, renewable energy and available technologies to help reduce energy consumption.

Construction

Promote the use of solar technologies, including architecturally attractive solar system integration, to replace conventional construction materials in the building envelope such as the roof, skylights or facades.

Affordability

Demonstrate that high performance solar homes can be comfortable, attractive and
affordable.
